Words from Doctor Binder

Dr. Binder has been featured for many of his accomplishments on T.V. and media related events including Discovery Health Channel, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC networks. He has been written up in many articles for more than two decades. However, when asked about his media appearances, Dr. Binder states,

“A media event about any aspect of medicine or surgery should be about new and novel accomplishments that advance the science and art of his or her specialty”.

All of us care about how we look and how other people see us. For many of us, these age-related changes can actually detract from our self-image, self-confidence and ultimately affect the quality of our lives. As a result, plastic surgery has had a very positive impact on those individuals looking to rejuvenate their faces or add an aesthetic enhancement to their overall appearance.

“HERE TODAY – GONE TOMORROW.” But unfortunately it is the patient that suffers. Many new procedures in the press are not successful in the long term.

The role of the plastic surgeon must be complete. Since there are so many new and novel techniques that have evolved, it is important for the surgeon to honestly evaluate the patient and their needs, then he must determine which techniques will best be suited for their needs. Many procedures that suddenly become popular, as promoted in the fashion literature, often soon fall out of favor and are no longer performed within a short period of time after being introduced.

“The surgeon must be a highly qualified and complete surgeon”

I have seen my role as a surgeon practicing facial plastic and reconstructive surgery undergo significant changes over the last 30 years. It is important for the surgeon to choose among the many plastic surgical approaches now available that will maximally benefit each patient. A surgical plan must be in place that follows a logical sequence to provide the optimal and longest lasting results that are appropriately implemented for the lifetime of each individual patient.

The modern day plastic surgeon must be empowered with many attributes that extend beyond the absolute requirement of a good technician. The plastic surgeon must concentrate on rendering predictable natural looking results that are in harmony and balance with the rest of the face. The surgeon also needs the ability to appreciate the different subtleties of facial imperfection and realize a greater level of observation, sophistication, and ultimately a refined technique that only experience can teach.

The current focus in facial plastic surgery is on improving one’s appearance by utilizing the concepts of support and structure. For example, Rhinoplasty (plastic surgery of the nose) used to be known as “reduction rhinoplasty”. Now it is called “structure rhinoplasty” which emphasizes supporting weaknesses and improving upon the flaws present in the patient’s nasal anatomy. These newer concepts are also applicable to most other procedures as well. This remains quite different from the theory and practice used in the plastic surgical techniques that were performed in the 1960’s and 1970’s. These procedures, which were much simpler and took less time, produced much more modest results and did not withstand the test of time.

The newer techniques now used in facial plastic surgery can provide truly remarkable and dramatic changes that were never before possible. It is ultimately the individual surgeon’s endeavor that will determine the final outcome of success. Having pioneered many plastic surgical procedures, my personal goal is to utilize all available resources and strive for the maximum degree of perfection possible by using current PROVEN SURGICAL TECHNIQUES within the limits of each patient’s physical makeup.

“The average consumer has grown accustomed to being sold on a particular procedure, with very hard-sell messages.”

I would never want to discourage anyone from considering a procedure to improve their appearance, but I also want the individual to have all of the facts related to ALL of the pertinent procedures. The well trained and credentialed surgeon is likely to have all of the applicable procedures available that should be ideally suited to each patient. Choosing a well trained surgeon is the most important patient decision in avoiding simply being sold on a particular procedure merely because the cosmetic doctor is limited in his surgical abilities and training.

“Not everyone is a good candidate for every procedure.”

During the consultation, particularly with patient’s who seek Rhinoplasty or Revision Rhinoplasty, it is Dr. Binder’s goal to educate the patient on “Why a particular procedure or course of treatment is better or more suited for a particular patient.” It is also important that the Rhinoplasty patient understand why certain negative or adverse things associated with the “bad Rhinoplasty” result – will not happen.

Management of Facial Lines and Wrinkles by Dr. BinderIn his book entitled, “Management of Facial Lines and Wrinkles”, Dr. Binder outlines the basis for a surgeon’s conversation with any cosmetic surgical candidate.

Today’s world of the internet and television media has provided all of us with a mass of information at the touch of a mouse button or TV switch. The good news is it is easy to obtain. The bad news is not all of the information is accurate. Many web sites and information obtained via the net are not “peer-reviewed”, meaning that it is not qualified, reviewed by a certifying board, academy or legitimate agency or journal. So the consumer should take the proper steps to make an educated, well-informed decision regarding cosmetic procedures with the right surgeon.
